Friday Fun Day

Alright, it’s a bit last-minute but let’s do Jersey Day in honor of the Yankees tomorrow. Wear any sports jersey or t-shirt, etc. If you’re a Yankee fan it can be Yanks stuff, but it could be any team from baseball or any other sport, too. Spread the word! :)

Homework: Wednesday, November 4, 2009

READING

  • 30 minutes total (partner-book self-assignment, and then backup book if extra time)
  • Jot an idea about your main character on your log.

SPELLING

  • Word Study Day ____ Homework

MATH

  • Finish Student Book p. 48.
  • REMEMBER TO USE THE NUMBER LINE IN YOUR MATH NOTEBOOK AND COUNT UP FROM THE SHORTER LENGTH TO THE LONGER ONE, OR VICE VERSA.
  • Remember — we put inches into groups of 12 (each group-of-12 is one foot long).

LANGUAGE ARTS

  • Continue reading and analyzing the structure of essays. Do a total of 4 essays (from our collection of mentor essays).

1. Read the essay.

 2. Mark up the essay. Put a box around the thesis statement and circle the 3 main reasons/examples in the Introduction. Underline the Topic Sentence at the beginning of each Body Paragraph (the one that states the reason/example for that paragraph). Put a box around the thesis statement and circle the 3 main reasons/examples in the Conclusion.

3. Copy the sentences directly from the essay (word for word) onto the “Structure of Essays” sheet.

Scholastic Book Club Orders

Hi Readers!

The October orders for Scholastic Book Clubs have been placed (they were due on Friday), so hopefully you’ll be receiving your books, if you ordered this time, within a week or two!

In addition, I used some of our bonus points to order 2 copies each of the first two “39 Clues” books, and one copy each of the “Island” series and the “Everest” series. :)

Thank you!

We have so much to be thankful for.

  • I’m grateful to Holm and his mom for bringing in some delicious bagels to help us celebrate the first of the month.
  • I’m grateful to Maddy and Katie H. and their families for being so creative and generous with their donations for our recent raffles.
  • I’m grateful to Katie C. and her mom for preparing the amazing Halloween treats for our party last week, and to Logan and his mom for the drinks, and to Stefan and his mom for the spooky napkins and plates.
  • I’m grateful to Jack Z.’s and Jack J.’s moms for helping us to organize our special events and festivities.
  • I’m thankful to all the generous and thoughtful volunteers who have been helping out with their time, consideration, and even their money to make our days here at school more enjoyable. Thank you!

What about you? What else are you grateful for?

Homework: Monday, November 2, 2009

READING

  • Read for 30 minutes or more on Monday at home.
  • Read for 30 minutes or more on Tuesday at home.
  • Fill out your log every time.
  • In your mind, make a timeline of the big things in your character’s life. Think back (and look back if it helps) to the beginning of the story, remembering the important things. Write this timeline in your reader’s notebook and bring it to school on Wednesday. Do this for your main book (for most of you, this is the book you’re reading with your partner).
  • ALWAYS be looking for your next partner-book ahead of time! We do not shop for books during reading workshop! Some of you finished your first partner books (that’s great) and didn’t have another one to read today, even after we went to library (that’s not good). You and your partners shouldbe browsing for some books together, making decisions and compromises together, checking books out, searching for extra copies if needed, etc. You may look for books during free snack times, at recess, after we pack up at the end of the day, and at other times as well, but not during reading workshop.

SPELLING

  • Word Study — tonight’s homework only. Do not do Tuesday’s homework. :)

MATH

  • Practice your basic multiplication and division facts for at least 5 minutes a day. Use flash cards, or try a game like the ones linked in our “math” section of the blogroll.
  • Keep your sense of wonder and excitement about measurement! Try some of the measuring activities we talked about in class today, look around and think about how YOU use measurement concepts in your life.

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • List 3 possible subjects for your project.

We had a great time putting on the show, and it was so much fun to see so many of you there!  We even made it into this article on patch.com. Check it out in the second paragraph! There are also some photos in the collection on the upper-right-hand side of the article. :)

Halloween Haunted House

haunted_house

We’ve been busy “haunting” our house this week, in the hopes of spooking you on Halloween night. A few things to think about…

* It will be violent and scary and there will be death (but no one will be harmed in real life, of course). If you’re not into that, it’s okay. You can go directly to the back porch for some candy and skip the haunted house.

* I will be a character in the haunted house, so I won’t be able to talk with you and socialize. We can do that in school on Monday after Halloween.

* We’re working hard at the little details, so be observant and try to notice them: the decorations on the front lawn and in the upstairs windows, the titles of the books and movies on the tables and shelves, the background noises, the photographs in the picture frames and the artwork on the walls, the cobwebs, etc…

* Please be respectful. It’s way more fun for us, and for the other visitors, when you play along and don’t be obnoxious on purpose. If you come with friends, ask them not to harass the performers either.

* Please be patient. Last year, there were huge crowds. We can only let in 5 or 10 people at a time. Visit some of the other houses on the street or wait patiently on the front lawn until your host comes to the door to bring you inside.

* I hope you can come! Have a great time!!
* It’s okay to bring your parents or friends inside with you.

*It’s not a party, it’s a haunted house.
